Migrants found 'suffocating', 2 dead, inside freight train near US-Mexico border

Authorities said Friday that two migrants were found dead in a freight train in Uvalde after they received a call for help from “suffocating” migrants.

Border Patrol and Uvalde Police said that 15 migrants were inside two cars of a freight train traveling from Eagle Pass to San Antonio.

Twelve of the migrants were inside a shipping container while three were in a hopper car. The two deceased migrants were in the shipping container.

  • Four of the survivors were air-lifted to San Antonio to receive adequate treatment while the others were evaluated at area hospitals, some of them in serious condition.

    “We are heartbroken to learn of yet another tragic incident of migrants taking the dangerous journey,” said Alejandro Mayorkas, Homeland Security Secretary.

    “Smugglers are callous and only care about making a profit.”
