Murder suspect takes own life after Virginia state troopers stopped car

A Connecticut murder suspect took his own life when state troopers in Virginia pulled his vehicle over, authorities said.

Waterbury investigators named Solomon Roberts Sr., 44, as a suspect after finding his 45-year-old wife Catherine Roberts dead from gunshot wounds and their teen son injured inside a home on Tuesday.

Shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday, Virginia State troopers were alerted about a murder suspect fleeing in a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander.

  • Later in the afternoon, the vehicle was spotted on Interstate 81 in Rockingham County and was stopped.

    But as troopers approached the car, they heard a gunshot being fired.

    “Roberts had fired a single round and succumbed to the injury almost immediately,” police said.

    Authorities have not disclosed further details about the incident citing the ongoing investigation.
