LA teen, 17, stabbed to death in broad daylight while waiting for mom outside restaurant

A 17-year-old high school student was stabbed and killed in a random attack while waiting for his mom to pick him up outside a Los Angeles restaurant Tuesday.

Xavier Chavarin was stabbed in broad daylight outside a Southern California restaurant at around 4:30 p.m., the LAPD said.

A suspect, with prior 'mental health incidents', was arrested the following day after he barricaded himself inside an Alhambra home.

  • Authorities believe that the suspect was involved in a separate stabbing of a 33-year-old man who survived the attack.

    “He is in custody. He will not be able to put anybody else in danger and it was done in a peaceful manner,” LAPD Official German Hurtado said of the arrest.

    “The crisis negotiation team and our mental evaluation unit did an outstanding job with him and assuring that we came to a peaceful resolution.”

    “They used all the de-escalation tactics and were very professional and he came out and surrendered to the officers without incident.”
