'Because of the reckless': Alabama father charged after forgetting child in car for hours, causing his death

Authorities in Atmore, Alabama charged a grieving father over the death of his toddler son whom he had unintentionally left in the back seat of a car for long hours Monday.

Shawn Rounsavall only realized that he forgot to drop off his child at daycare when he went to pick the boy up in the evening. By that time, the child couldn't be saved.

“This is a terrible, terrible tragedy,” Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks said. “This community is shocked.”

  • The death of the 2-year-old boy left the family, the community and even officers devastated, Brooks said adding that charges were brought against Rousnavall who forgot the child in the car for hours while he worked at his restaurant.

    “Because of the reckless...or the disregard for the child, you know, a criminal charge, he was arrested for that particular incident,” Brooks said.

    Rounsavall was charged with reckless murder. His bond was set at $500,000 on Tuesday.
