Woman dies after plunging off Niagara falls with son who's fighting for life in hospital

A woman is dead and her son is clinging to life at a hospital after she jumped from Niagara Gorge in Niagara Falls State Park with the child Monday.

The pair landed near the entrance to the Cave of the Winds after falling more than 90 feet to the bottom of the gorge.

Prior to the tragic fall, the mom and child were at the park with the woman's husband. State Parks Police Capt. Chris Rola said that a motive remains unknown.

  • “The investigation is ongoing, but we don't believe it is an accident,” he added.

    The child was taken to John R. Oishei Children's Hospital of Buffalo with severe head injuries. He was listed in critical condition.

    The woman's body was recovered and taken to the coroner's office.
