A Georgia police officer is facing charges over the death of a Gwinnett County teen whose remains were located 20 miles away from her home, and six months after her disappearance last week.
Miles Bryant, 22, was fired from his job as a jailer in Forsyth County upon his arrest on concealing the death of another and false report of a crime Monday.
Investigators said that Bryant and the victim, 16-year-old Susanna Morales, had no relationship. The suspect lived near the area where Morales went missing on the night of July 26.
The victim last texted her mom telling her that she was on her way home. Detectives said that she somehow got into a car and vanished.
Last week, her remains were located near the Barrow County line. In his arrest warrant, Police said that Bryant “lives in close proximity to victim and dumped her naked body in the woods.”
“I was shocked,” Morales' sister late Monday. “I had to process it for a second. I was just like what? That explains why it took so long for us to have an answer.”
“It's a police officer. I'm guessing they know how to cover their tracks.”
Gwinnett County investigators are working to determine a manner and cause of death for Susana.
“Now we know, we know something. We are just hoping everything will come to light soon. We will finally have the closure and justice that she deserves,” the sister added.
