Months after the body of a missing Florida mother was found buried in a shallow grave in Alabama, her ex-boyfriend was charged with kidnapping resulting in death on Wednesday.
35-year-old Marcus Spanevelo was already charged with abuse of a corpse charges over the March 27, 2022 disappearance of Cassie Carlie, who was last seen alive in the parking lot of a Navarre, Florida parking lot, where she met Spanevelo for the custody exchange of their 4-year-old daughter.
“[Spanevelo] did knowingly, unlawfully and willfully seize, confine, inveigle, decoy, kidnap, abduct, carry away, and otherwise hole [Cassie Carli] for his own benefit and purpose,” the indictment read.
“The Defendant knowingly used a means, facility, and instrumentality of interstate and foreign commerce, including but not limited to a cellphone and a GMC motor vehicle, which offense resulted in the death of [Cassie Carli].”
Detectives found Carli's purse inside her abandoned car. Her daughter was also found safe. The mother's body was found in April 2022 inside a barn on Highway 11 in Springfield, Alabama.
The St. Clair County Coroner's Office ruled Carli's cause and manner of death as “undetermined” with “no obvious signs of trauma.”
