California mom arrested after house fire kills unattended toddler, critically hurts baby

A California woman is behind bars after a fire broke out inside a home where she left her two young children unattended Monday killing one.

Nikia Rain Magby, 26, faces murder and child abuse counts over the incident that occurred inside a San Bernardino County apartment.

Flames engulfed the residence where 2-year-old Catalena Fusaro and her 11-month-old brother were left alone.

  • When firefighters pulled the young children out of the burning apartment, neither was breathing, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said.

    “Firefighters simultaneously worked on a fire attack, patient care & search of any additional victims inside the apartment unit,” authorities said.

    Little Catalena died shortly later at a local hospital. Her baby brother remains in critical condition.

    The cause of the fire is being investigated by the fire department.
