A California woman is behind bars after a fire broke out inside a home where she left her two young children unattended Monday killing one.
Nikia Rain Magby, 26, faces murder and child abuse counts over the incident that occurred inside a San Bernardino County apartment.
Flames engulfed the residence where 2-year-old Catalena Fusaro and her 11-month-old brother were left alone.
When firefighters pulled the young children out of the burning apartment, neither was breathing, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said.
“Firefighters simultaneously worked on a fire attack, patient care & search of any additional victims inside the apartment unit,” authorities said.
Little Catalena died shortly later at a local hospital. Her baby brother remains in critical condition.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the fire department.
