Authorities in Phoenix are expecting the death toll to rise after at least three people died in a fiery pileup early Thursday morning.

The crash involving two semi-trucks and two cars sparked an “extensive hazardous materials fire” according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Investigators believe the pileup started at around 6:10 a.m. when a semi-truck crashed on Interstate 10 near the Loop 202 Santan Freeway interchange.

Footage from the scene depicted the obliterated truck engulfed in flames. Authorities confirmed three fatalities in the deadly collision that was caused likely the result of drivers' inattention.

Hours earlier, at around 3:30 a.m., officers responded to another crash involving multiple semi-trucks on the same interstate roughly five miles away from the deadly pileup scene.
