'Beautiful little boy' stabbed to death by grandfather while temporarily staying at Texas home with parents

An 8-year-old “beautiful little boy” who loved to cook and was temporarily staying with his parents at his grandfather's North Richland Hills home was stabbed to death on New Year's Day, police said.

62-year-old Phillip Hughes now faces capital murder charged for fatally stabbing the boy for unknown reasons at around 8 a.m. Sunday inside his Labadie Drive home.

“Upon arrival, officers made entry to the residence and located what we now know to be a deceased 8-year-old male,” Officer Sheena McEachran said.

    The victim's great-grandmother said that the boy and his parents were staying with Hughes “until they could get him another place to live.”

    “He liked to cook, which we were excited about, and my daughter ordered him a chef's hat with his name on it and an apron and he brought that with him so he could help in the kitchen.”
