Authorities in Tampa, Florida charged a 25-year-old man with first-degree murder over the death of a one-month-old infant he was asked to care for earlier this month.
Cortavius Thompson told detectives that he was in the bathroom when he heard the baby crying on the afternoon of December 8.
He claimed that when he went to check on the infant, he “noticed various signs of trauma” on the unconscious child.
He then “placed the infant in the bathtub in an attempt to wake the baby” and called the mom who was at work.
The baby died the following morning at a hospital. Doctors said that he was suffering upper body trauma injuries.
The medical examiner’s office ruled the baby’s death a homicide after determining that the injuries were not accidental.
Police said that the baby was not injured when his mom returned home for lunch earlier that day.
