2 Connecticut police officers lured to fake domestic incident before fatal ambush: ‘They responded without hesitation’

Two Connecticut police officers were killed and a third is fighting for life after they responded to a fake domestic incident in Bristol late Wednesday.

Officers Dustin DeMonte, 35; Alex Hamzy, 34; and Alec Iurato, 26, were ambushed by suspect Nicholas Brutcher, 35, at around 10:30 p.m. while responding to his call for help on Redstone Hill Road in Bristol.

Upon arrival, the suspect and his 32-year-old brother Nathan Brutcher opened fire at the unsuspecting officers from an AR-15 fatally wounding officers DeMonte and Hamzy.

The surviving cop sustained serious gunshot wounds, underwent surgery, and remains hospitalized.

  • “They answered a call to duty, and they responded without hesitation, and that’s what they did every night before that,” Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould said.

    “And that’s what all our officers do and will continue to do day after day.”

    Both suspects were shot in the incident; Nicholas Brutcher, who was firing at the officers, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    “This is a devastating reminder of the dangers that police officers face every day to protect our families and neighbors from all kinds of situations,” Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said.
