Purdue University student arrested for murder of roommate

A student was murdered in a residence hall of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana early Wednesday, police said.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Gji Min Sha, called the university police at around 1 a.m. to report killing his roommate Varun Manish Chheda, 20.

“I believe this was unprovoked and senseless,” Purdue University Chief of Police Lesley Weite said.

    The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office said that Chheda, a senior majoring in data science, died from “multiple sharp force traumatic injuries.”

    “There is no threat to the community,” School Spokesperson Tim Doty said earlier.

    Perdue University President Mitch Daniels added in a statement “this is as tragic an event as we can imagine happening on our campus and our hearts and thoughts go out to all those affected by this terrible event.”
