Police in Newton, Massachusetts arrested a woman who admitted to killing her ex-landlord after he confronted her about forged checks.
The family of 65-year-old Leonard Garber reported him missing on Sept. 26 telling police that he had recently been in contact with a former tenant identified as Xiu Fang Ke.
The 43-year-old suspect admitted to killing Garber with a hammer after he learned that she had been forging checks from accounts belonging to him.
His body was found hidden under construction materials and covered with a curtain.
Fang Ke was arrested without incident. She reportedly talked about being suicidal and having gambling debts on a chat group.
“Mr. Garber was a member of our community,” Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said. “He attended synagogue here; he had friends and neighbors who knew and cared about him. You, too are in our thoughts.”
