Illinois toddler clings to life after shooting self in head with unsecured gun

A Joliet, Illinois boy is clinging to life after he sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Tuesday using an unsecured gun that was left within his reach.

The 2-year-old boy was found in critical condition inside his family home in the 300 block of Comstock Street at about 12:15 p.m.

Officers performed lifesaving measures at the scene before transporting the victim to St. Joseph Medical Center and then to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

  • The toddler’s mom told investigators that she’s been with him in the bedroom where he found the unsecured weapon when she left for minutes to retrieve something.

    An investigation is underway to determine who the weapon belonged to and file charges.

    “Especially like this where there is a tragedy, there has to be some sort of accountability in a case like this, so that is something that is completely within the realm of this investigation,” Sgt. Dwayne English with the Joliet Police Department said.
