Before her body was discovered Monday, a South Carolina mall janitor was dead in a store bathroom for four days.
Bessie Durham, 63, was found dead in a department store bathroom at the Columbiana Centre mall where she worked for Belk.
Her cleaning cart was left outside the restroom stall, police said, and an employee recalled seeing her for the last time on Thursday. Security footage also caught her entering the bathroom Thursday evening but never leaving.
Police are investigating whether negligence was involved in the incident.
“We’re still working with the store to find out what their process is to closing down the store, inspecting the store and things of that nature,” Deputy Chief Melron Kelly said.
Foul play and drug use are not suspected in the janitor’s sudden death, the coroner’s office said.
