Tampa college student, 19, fatally shot after mistakenly stepping into stranger’s car

A New York teen was fatally shot hours after celebrating his birthday when he mistakenly got into a stranger’s car on Saturday.

Carson Senfield, a University of Tampa student, sustained a mortal wound to his upper body and died after a night out with friends.

Senfield mistakenly stepped into the shooter’s car shortly after an Uber dropped him off near his West Arch Street residence at around 1 a.m.

The shooter, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car remained at the scene and was cooperating in the investigation.

  • “The UT administration is deeply saddened to report that a UT student was killed early this morning near the intersection of W. Arch and N. Munro streets,” the University of Tampa said in a statement.

    “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the student’s family and friends, as well as all who were affected by this incident. The University values all members of the community and mourns this tragic loss.”

    Senfield’s father Darren described his late son as “such a bright light to everybody.”

    “We don’t have our son, we’re mourning, we’re heartbroken, we’re devastated. It was a senseless tragedy that we’re still trying to figure out, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter, we don’t have our Carson with us.”
