Georgia man’s remains found near Mill Creek; older brother arrested

A missing Georgia man’s remains were found near the Mill Creek Community more than a year after he vanished in mysterious circumstances.

Tony Lamar Cates, 52, was not seen since May 10, 2021. His co-worker told investigators that he spoke with him earlier that day and he seemed in good spirits.

Cates’ car was abandoned at Mill Creek Baptist Church in Dahlonega. Authorities have asked residents to help find the man.

  • Earlier this week, Lumpkin County deputies located human remains in the area. They said that the finding is related to Cates’ disappearance case.

    The Georgia Bureau of Investigations arrested Cates’ older brother, 55-year-old Charles Edward Cates Jr., on murder charges.

    Investigators are awaiting autopsy results to confirm the human remains’ identity and determine a cause of death.
