A Texas boy died Thursday after he was left for an extended amount of time in a hot car outside a Hidalgo County elementary school where a relative worked.
The 5-year-old child was found unresponsive at around 4:04 p.m. as temperatures reached triple digits outside Dr. Americo Paredes Elementary, police said.
It is believed the child was a relative of a staff member of the school and was also enrolled as a student in the district.
“I want to assure parents and our community that our schools are safe. This was an isolated incident,” La Joya Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Gisela Saenz said.
“We’re providing support to our students and staff with additional counseling service.”
