California musician, wife found dead near car in Mojave Desert

A California musician and his wife were found dead on a dirt trail in the Mojave Desert east of California City, authorities said.

Larry and Betty Petree were located Sunday afternoon, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s office.

  • Larry was in the driver’s seat while Betty’s body was found leaning against the rear tire. Foul play is not suspected in their deaths.

    Larry, 88, was a beloved musician who played pedal steel guitar with the band Soda Crackers. He and his wife were married for more than six decades.

    “He always had a smile on his face,” a friend of the late artist said. “He was just a sweetheart of a guy and he was always there to help other people. I just can’t believe they’re gone and in such a bizarre fashion.”
