Authorities in Citrus County are probing what they initially thought was a suicide of an Ocala detention deputy as murder after he was fatally shot at his Pine Ridge residence.
31-year-old Cory Schweitzer was pronounced dead at the scene of the fatal shooting shortly before 4 p.m. on Aug. 19.
Although his death initially appeared to be a suicide, further investigation determined the Marion County detention deputy was killed.
22-year-old Jacqueline Jasmine Johnson-Cabrera was arrested Wednesday on second-degree murder charges.
The woman was Schweitzer’s ex-girlfriend and had also been working at the Ocala jail before her resignation following an inmate’s escape.
“Investigating homicide cases is difficult enough, let alone when the victim is a fellow law enforcement officer,” Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast said.
“This case presented many unique factors and, with the arrest of Johnson-Cabrera, I hope and pray the family and colleagues can now begin the healing process.”
