Wingate University basketball player fatally struck by train: ‘Super excited for the chapter of his life’

A Virginia student who had just joined North Carolina’s Wingate University was fatally struck by a train near campus late Tuesday.

Kyle Honore was found on the tracks near the college entrance at around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday.

“The young man succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital,” police stated. “The Wingate Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the friends, family, and Wingate University classmates impacted by this incident.”

  • Honore, a Dumfries, Virginia native, was named the Cardinal District Player of the Year during his senior year at Potomac High, where his father, Keith Honore, was the basketball team coach.

    The proud father had on August 14 tweeted about dropping his child off at Wingate University.

    “When your child leaves you, a part of you leaves with him. Super excited for the chapter of his life,” he reportedly wrote.
