Florida police detective succumbs to injuries sustained during shootout with robbery suspects

A Florida police detective who was shot in the line of duty Monday as he tried to arrest two robbery suspects in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood succumbed to his injuries late Wednesday.

29-year-old Officer Cesar “Echy” Echaverry was critically wounded during a shootout with two suspects trying to rob a convenience store. Both suspects were later shot dead by officers.

Echaverry died late Wednesday at Jackson Memorial Hospital where a crowd of his colleagues gathered to support him and his family.

Wednesday’s Miami Marlins game saw the baseball team dedicating a jersey to honor the brave officer with his name and the number nine scribbled on the back.

  • “It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Officer Cesar “Echy” Echaverry,” MDPD Director Alfredo Ramirez said Wednesday.

    “Surrounded by loved ones, Echy succumbed to his injuries after a brief battle for his life.”

    “He laid down his life to stop a violent criminal, and we will be forever grateful for his selfless service and sacrifice to our community,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said.

    “Echy, as he was lovingly known to his police family, will be remembered always for his courage, his sense of duty, and his unwavering dedication to keeping our residents safe.”
