Fourth-grader dies after falling 100 feet while hiking at popular trail

A 10-year-old Indiana girl had fallen to her death while hiking at a popular Jackson County trail with her family Friday afternoon.

Everly Montgomery fell 100 feet to her death at the Shawnee National Forest and was flown to an area hospital where she died.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of our elementary teacher, Mrs. Montgomery, whose daughter Everly passed away following a tragic accident on Friday,” North Daviess Community Schools said in a statement.

    The victim was a member of the Odon Christian Church, volleyball and softball teams, cross-country club, and Girls Who Code.

    “The family loved attending her athletic events together. When not playing sports, Everly loved riding her bicycle to the local library,” an obituary reads.

    “She was a bright, inquisitive young girl and an avid reader. Her smile and enthusiasm could brighten anyone’s day.”
