The owner of a pack of seven dogs had been busted after his pets mauled a 71-year-old Fresno man to death on his way to a local store on July 18.
Freddy Garcia was attacked at around 1:30 p.m. by the seven dogs, all pit bull mixes, and died at Memorial Hermann in downtown Houston shortly later.
Four of the involved pooches were caught at the scene while three others took off; by Friday, authorities have located the animals and identified Samuel Cartwright as their owner.
The 47-year-old was charged with an attack by a dog resulting in death and is being detained at the Fort Bend County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
“This devastating tragedy didn’t have to happen,” Fort Bend Sheriff Eric Fagan said. “I extend my deepest condolences to the Garcia family and his neighbors as they adjust to the loss of Mr. Garcia.”
“Special thanks go out to our deputies, Fort Bend Animal Services Director Rene Vasquez, and Fort Bend District Attorney Brian Middleton for the collaborative work of capturing the dogs and making an arrest.”
