At least four people were pronounced dead at the scene of a fiery crash in Newark’s South Ward early Saturday morning, authorities said.
The crash took place shortly before 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Thorne and Frelinghuysen Avenue, according to preliminary information.
Investigators believe that a car rear-ended a truck trailer and another car before all three vehicles caught flames and downed a power line.
Four people died from severe burns at the scene while a fifth was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition.
Residents of the area said that they had complained of drag racing on the avenue but couldn’t confirm whether it had something to do with Saturday’s crash.
Several agencies responded to the scene; firefighters had reportedly stretched three lines to extinguish the flames.
