Lightning strikes at Fort Gordon Army base killing one soldier, hurting 9

A fatal lightning strike claimed a soldier’s life Wednesday morning and left nine others wounded at the Fort Gordon army base in Georgia.

The lightning bolt struck the training area of the base’s Range Control station at around 11 a.m.

A total of 10 service members were harmed, one fatally, as a field training event took place around the same time.

  • The victims were rushed to the Eisenhower Army Medical Center for treatment. Public Affairs Officer Anne Bowman declined to identify the decedent.

    “Hopefully by noon tomorrow, we’ll have more information,” she said.

    The Fort Gordon base houses Army units near the border with South Carolina about 10 miles west of downtown Augusta.
