Second inmate dies in Maine jail in a week as Portland Police investigate

Authorities in Portland, Maine are investigating the death of a Cumberland County jail inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday morning.

The death of the male inmate, aged 65or 66 years old, came days after a 35-year-old female prisoner died from a suspected overdose in her cell at the York County Jail.

  • The recent fatality was discovered by a Cumberland County corrections officer who noticed the unresponsive man in his cell at around 9:57 a.m. Wednesday.

    Jail security and medical staff tried life-saving measures before a crew from Portland’s ambulance service joined the efforts to revive the inmate but to no avail.

    “Until all proper notifications are made the name of the deceased will not be released and the cause and manner of the death will be determined by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office,” Capt. John Costello said.
