Oklahoma inmate died in jail from suspected drug overdose

Oklahoma County Jail officials are investigating the suspicious death of a 25-year-old inmate who had passed away in his cell early Friday morning.

At around 2 a.m., a correction officer found Eddie Garcia lying unresponsive in his cell during a sight check.

The prisoner was pronounced dead at 3:03 a.m. at a local hospital from a suspected fentanyl overdose, officials said.

  • Garcia entered the facility in late March after leading police in a chase that put others at risk while traveling in a stolen car. He also faced a protective order violation.

    “The introduction of contraband into the jail can have deadly consequences,” Jail Administrator Greg Williams said earlier this month.

    “We will continue to be proactive and vigilant. Any employee, contract worker or visitor attempting to bring in contraband will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, period.”
