Wife of slain NC firefighter busted after calling 911 to report death from ‘self-inflicted’ gunshot wound

Authorities in Randolph County, North Carolina have arrested the wife of a slain firefighter and charged her with his murder after determining his death was not from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as initially reported.

Randolph County Firefighter Mishael “MJ” James Auman was transported to a hospital on June 25 after a shooting at his Seagrove residence. He succumbed to his injuries shortly later.

  • After an investigation into Auman’s death, detectives arrested his wife, Heather Hicks Auman, on murder charges. She was denied bond.

    “MJ served the citizens of Randolph County and the Seagrove community for over 21 years. This is a devastating blow to the fire service of our county,” RC Fire Marshal Erik Beard said.

    “MJ’s infectious smile, outgoing personality, and willingness to serve others will forever be missed throughout our county’s fire service.”
