The remains of a missing New Mexico woman were found in a rural Sandoval County area late last month and police arrested her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend on suspicion of killing her.
Yasmin Marquez, 20, was reported missing on April 15 by her family after she left in her mother’s car to meet with the suspect, Jonathan Martinez.
The victim’s mother said that after breaking up, Marquez left Martinez in Mexico and returned to live with her.
One day after she vanished, Marquez’s car was found charred and abandoned with bloody clothes inside in Corrales.
Text messages on the victim’s phone revealed threats made by the suspect; investigators used the phone data to locate the remains in an open field in Sandoval County.
At the time of Marquez’s death, Martinez was wanted over a homicide investigation. On June 23, he was rebooked for Marquez’s murder, tampering with evidence, and false imprisonment.
