A Detroit toddler was found dead in a freezer in the basement of his family on Friday and police arrested his 30-year-old mother as part of the investigation.
The woman, who was not identified, told officers who knocked at her door after a welfare check request that there was nothing wrong.
But the officers’ intuition led to the search of the home where the decomposed body of a 3-year-old boy was found in the freezer.
“Very troubling case. Very, very troubling case,” Detroit Police Chief James E. White said.
Police confirmed neighbors’ statements about five other kids living at the house described by White as being in
“poor condition”.
However, one of the family’s neighbors refuted allegations of abuse noting that the kids seemed normal and well-raised.
“They were fine. They were riding their bikes, and they knew when I brought my dog out – I guess they taught them don’t go past the bushes when a dog is out because I have a pit.”
