A 50-year-old lime plant worker died after a freak accident at the Giles County site where he had been recruited just nine weeks ago.
The tragedy unfolded at the Lhoist Chemical Lime Plant at around 4 p.m. when first responders received a report about a contractor that was trapped in chemicals at the mine.
The victim’s excavator toppled over, trapping him in the cab that was completely engulfed in chemicals, officials said.
He died on the Level 7 of the mine after suffering deadly chemical wounds. Another employee was reportedly
harmed while trying to help the decedent and was treated for minor burns at the scene.
They both were contractors with Gillman Services Inc. the site was closed as investigators with the Virginia Department of Energy were probing the fatal incident.
