Decorated FDNY veteran killed in freak accident when tree falls on car

A veteran FDNY firefight was killed during a windstorm when a huge tree fell on the car carrying him and his family in Asheville, North Carolina.

The highly decorated veteran of 16 years, Casey Skudin was only hours shy of turning 46. The tragic accident that claimed his life and left his 10-year-old child hospitalized came during a family vacation trip to Biltmore Estates in North Carolina.

  • "During a weather event involving high winds, a tree fell across a road on the estate entrance and struck a guest vehicle," Biltmore spokesperson Marisson Jamison said.

    “This is a devastating tragedy and we are deeply saddened by this news,” Biltmore said in a statement over the accident. “Our heartfelt thoughts are with the family and their loved ones, and we are offering assistance at this time.”

    The late firefighter's wife shared a heartbreaking post on Instagram revealing that the family trip was to celebrate Skudin's birthday and Father's Day.
