The FDNY trainee firefighter who passed during a training exercise late last year died from natural causes, the Medical Examiner’s Office revealed.
Vincent Malveaux, 31, died of exertional rhabdomyolysis, a condition caused by muscles breaking down and releasing proteins into blood amid strenuous exercise or extreme training circumstances.
At the time of Malveaux’s death on Dec. 2, he was six weeks into an 18-week course preparing him to join the fire department. Authorities considered he died while on duty.
“I believe Vin used it for inspiration and motivation, a reminder each day as he got out of bed,” Malveaux’s brother said of a 2012 FDNY calendar he kept on the wall.
“That was the first thing that came into his view – of his attainable goal.”
