FDNY firefighter died from natural causes during training: Autopsy

The FDNY trainee firefighter who passed during a training exercise late last year died from natural causes, the Medical Examiner’s Office revealed.

Vincent Malveaux, 31, died of exertional rhabdomyolysis, a condition caused by muscles breaking down and releasing proteins into blood amid strenuous exercise or extreme training circumstances.

  • At the time of Malveaux’s death on Dec. 2, he was six weeks into an 18-week course preparing him to join the fire department. Authorities considered he died while on duty.

    “I believe Vin used it for inspiration and motivation, a reminder each day as he got out of bed,” Malveaux’s brother said of a 2012 FDNY calendar he kept on the wall.

    “That was the first thing that came into his view – of his attainable goal.”
