Multiple law enforcement agencies in Texas are looking for a murderer who took off from a bus after stabbing the driver on Thursday.
Gonzalo Lopez, 46, fled from the transport bus driven by a corrections officer in a rural county between Gatesville and Huntsville. Authorities are now looking for him off the Leon County interstate.
The inmate “was somehow able to get out of his shackles and get into the driver’s compartment of the bus.”
He “was able to overpower the driver. There was a struggle…the bus went off the roadway,” police said.
“We do not know if he has obtained any kind of a weapon,” Texas Department of Criminal Justice Spokesman Robert Hurst said.
“Last we saw him he did not appear to have a weapon in his possession, but who knows what he might’ve been able to get.”
Chief of Staff for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Jason Clark said that although there were 16 inmates aboard the bus at the time of the incident, only Lopez escaped custody.
In 2006, Lopez was convicted of murdering a man near the Texas-Mexico border.
