A Rocky Mount couple was arrested over the “suspicious” deaths of an infant and a toddler found unresponsive at the family home Saturday.
Police responded to a call for an “Assist E.M.S” from a resident at the 900 block of Drew Street at around 9:30 a.m.
Once at the scene, officers and EMS found two unresponsive children, a 3-month-old boy, and his one-year-old sister, and rushed them to UNC Nash Healthcare where they were pronounced dead.
The Rocky Mount investigators initially labeled the deaths as “suspicious” but later upgraded the status to homicides.
The children’s mom Zharia Noel and her boyfriend Ahmene Butler, both 21, were charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse.
Authorities declined to reveal further details about the children’s deaths citing the ongoing investigation; they urged anyone with information to contact the RMPD at 252-972-1411.
