USS George Washington sailor commits suicide; 3rd in a week

In a matter of one week, the USS George Washington saw three suicides among sailors assigned to the ship, according to the Navy.

The latest suicide took place on April 15, when Master-at-Arms Seaman Recruit Xavier Hunter Mitchel-Sandor took his own life, shooting himself dead.

  • He was found unresponsive onboard the ship and taken to the Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News where he was declared dead.

    “NCIS is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of MASR Xavier Mitchell-Sandor, as we do in response to all non-combat, medically unattended fatalities of Department of the Navy service members.”

    On April 9, Retail Services Specialist 3rd Class Mika’il Sharp died by suicide while Interior Communications Electrician 3rd Class Natasha Huffman ended her life the following day.
