A New York City man and his elderly mother died Friday in a tragic fire that engulfed their Chinatown apartment.
The 52-year-old disabled man was reportedly left to sleep by his health caretaker at around 3 a.m., and less than an hour later, flames caught his room.
The victim’s 91-year-old mother suffered severe burns and died at New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, authorities said.
At least four firefighters sustained injuries while battling the fire that started on the fifth floor but shortly later reached the sixth floor of the building.
“There was some collapse of the interior stairs – we had one firefighter fall through those stairs,” FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief John Sarrocco said.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the deadly blaze.
