Jail officers seize meat cleaver sent to Riverhead Correctional Facility inmate

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident where a meat cleaver was sent to an inmate at the Riverhead Correctional Facility in an Amazon package.

Officers found other items inside the same package that were delivered to the inmate but have confiscated the sharp weapon.

The Sheriff’s Office added that the inspection of all packages sent to inmates prevented the entry of such a dangerous item into the prison.

“Careful inspection and processing of all mail and packages before they enter the correctional facility is critical,” Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. said.

“Any dangerous item, let alone a large knife, that makes its way into the facility could be deadly for staff and inmates alike.”
