Lake County authorities have arrested a man and charged him with aggravated animal cruelty after he allegedly shot his neighbor’s dog dead for rooting through his garbage.
The incident occurred when Curtis Jones found his neighbor’s dog going through the trash can and shot him more than 80 times.
Jones claimed that he only meant to scare the animal and didn’t want to put him down. But investigators ruled that the dog was shot “birdshot” directly.
“At ten yards, depending on the shotgun barrel, birdshot [load] can have an overall pattern spread over a foot in diameter. As the distance increases, so too does the spread.”
The dog died less than one hour at a veterinarian's office; its owner described calling for him to come inside, then searching for it when it didn’t respond. She later saw it limping toward her.
