Detroit news, Michigan news.

A Detroit boy had miraculously survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said.

A 30-year-old woman, identified as Janette Ann Smith, was visiting the toddler’s family home at 4:45 p.m. Friday and brought a gun with her.

Police believe the 3-year-old boy found the weapon in Smith’s coat and fired the shot that hit his head as the woman and his mom spoke in the kitchen.

“If you own a gun and you know young children will be in your orbit, secure it so that there will be no access.”

“If you are traveling with a gun, follow the law while doing so, and by all means, make sure that children cannot get to it. Secure your gun and save young lives from death, serious injury or harm of any kind.”

Smith has since been charged with careless, reckless, or negligent use of a firearm.
