Catskill news, New York news.

As part of an investigation into a police-involved fatality, New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office released graphic footage of a man set on fire after the use of a Taser.

The incident occurred in a Catskill Police Station on October 30 when 29-year-old Jason Jones stormed into the building and shouted at officers while acting violently.

Moments later, he grabbed a gallon jug of hand sanitizer and doused himself. The argument between him and cops continued for several minutes before one drew a Taser and discharged it at Jones who then burst into flames.

Jones could be seen in the video writhing in pain while his upper body burned for at least 23 seconds. He died from his burns on Dec. 15.

“However, none of the answers as to whether the officers used appropriate force are provided in the video.”

Global Security Group CEO David Katz said that “once the alcohol is on him, you can’t use the Taser.”

“I’m becoming less and less enamored with Taser technology. There are many failures, but increasingly, officers are so afraid to use their firearm that they are using Tasers and other less-than-lethal means when they should be shooting.”
