A Memphis man was arrested over the murder of his roommate whose remains were found stuffed inside a suitcase that was left near dumpsters earlier this month.

Julian Summers, 30, was charged with second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse over the grisly find.

The body of 63-year-old Bruce Jefferies was discovered in the suitcase at around 10 p.m. on December 12. Detectives at the scene noticed apparent blunt force trauma to the victim’s head.

  • An eyewitness told cops that they saw a man emerging from an alley with the suitcase at about 10 a.m. that day and when he reached the dumpster, he tried to throw the suitcase in there but couldn’t due to it being too heavy.

The witness added that the man ran away from the scene after spotting them, adding to suspicions. Authorities said that surveillance footage depicted Summers trying to discard the suitcase into the dumpster before heading to a bank.

The suitcase had left a blood trail back to Broadmoor Apartment complex, South Cleveland where the victim and suspect had been living for a couple of years.

A search of their apartment revealed signs of struggle, including broken glass and mirror, and blood everywhere throughout the apartment.
