In a matter of a few weeks, researchers made two discoveries of a rare Pacific species that washed ashore along California beaches.
According to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the football fish washed up at Swami’s Beach in Encinitas.
It was a 13-inch-long, 5-pound female anglerfish, one of only 31 specimens collected throughout the years.
On Nov. 13, another football fish washed up near Black’s Beach in La Jolla. However, it vanished before researchers reached the scene where it showed up.
“Experts don’t have any evidence to theorize why these fish are washing ashore in Southern California, but want to learn more about the specimens that have been collected or any new ones that might wash up,” said Scripps’ spokeswoman Brittany Hook on Facebook.
