San Jose man busted after stabbing elderly roommate, burning scene using flammable accelerants

A San Jose man was busted this week in connection with a deadly house fire that claimed the life of his elderly roommate last September.

23-year-old Jimmie Leonard Hollings IV is believed to have stabbed 74-year-old Janis Karlins with a “sharp object” shortly before dawn on Sept. 27 at the Cupertino house they shared.

  • Hollings then allegedly proceeded to start a fire using flammable accelerants and focused on a first-floor bedroom at the back of the residence.

    Authorities said that two other individuals were inside the home when the fire took place but were not harmed.

    Hollings was denied bond as he awaits a Tuesday court appearance. He is currently detained at the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
