Louisville construction worker gunned down, officer injured when gunman opened fire in interstate

An innocent construction worker was killed and a Louisville Metro Police Department officer hurt when a gunman randomly opened fire in an interstate early Friday.

The victim, identified as 37-year-old Fred O’Bannon, was working for the City’s Paving and Construction at around 2:30 a.m. at the scene of the incident when the gunman approached and shot him dead.

After killing O’Bannon, the gunman targeted an officer controlling traffic near the construction site and shot him. The officer managed to fire back, hitting the suspect after a brief foot pursuit.

  • Both the officer and suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Keyshaun Joseph Canard Stewart, were rushed to hospital.

    The slain construction worker was pronounced dead at the scene. His employer revealed that he was a father of many children.

    “Needless to say, our entire team is devastated by the loss of Fred and we stand committed to support his family and team members through this tragedy,” the company’s Vice President Hunter Strickland said.

    “We ask that everyone join us in keeping Fred, his family, and his friends in your thoughts and prayers.”
