Rittenhouse’s acquittal sent crowds of angry protesters into Portland streets; Authorities declared situation ‘a riot’

Violent protesters took to Portland streets Friday evening shortly after a Kenosha jury found Kyle Rittenhouse not guilty of all charges.

A crowd of about 200 people gathered in downtown Portland at around 8:50 p.m. and started the looting, smashing the businesses’ windows and setting fires.

  • Portland Police Bureau Chief Chuck Lovell said that at 9 p.m., demonstrators began throwing objects at officers, and the situation was declared “a riot.”

    “A crowd has gathered near SE 2nd Avenue and SE Madison Street and participants have begun breaking windows and damaging doors of city facilities in the area. People are throwing objects at police officers in the area.”

    Similar protests were reported across the country after the verdict announcement including outside of Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in New York where violent clashes took place.
