A New York City man has caught fire and was left fighting for his life amid an encounter with police that deployed a Taser on him.

Jason Jones, 29, is currently in intensive care after he sustained severe injuries amid an argument with law enforcement last weekend.

Chief Dave Darling said that Jones was known to local officers and had covered himself with hand sanitizer prompting cops to taser and subdue him.

  • “I think they were afraid he was going to hurt himself, and that’s what started it,” Darling said. “There are still details that we’re trying to develop.”

Darling described the incident as “horrible” adding that the Greene County District Attorney’s Office is probing the ordeal.

Source had reported that Jones poured the flammable liquid on himself after walking into the village police department. The man’s family lawyer declined to comment on why he was at the police headquarters in the first place.

“We’ve requested the preservation of recordings and written materials and have no further comments,” the attorney said.
