“An extremely violent” man was shot dead by a Fort Smith Police officer who heroically intervened to stop a murder spree that claimed two lives and inflicted a critical wound to the policeman’s neck.

The incident occurred Sunday morning when Police received a call reporting a shirtless man attacking a teen, which turned out to be his 15-year-old son, with a rock to the head and face in the street.

When the officer arrived, the suspect acted like complying with his orders, before producing a knife and cutting the officer’s neck.

“I have no doubt that our officers’ swift action saved this young child’s life,” Fort Smith Police Chief Danny Baker said.

The suspect’s son was declared dead at the hospital. The officer underwent emergency surgery and is in stable condition. Police Chief Baker added that two officers were placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.

“We’re all left scared, angry, frustrated, sometimes hopeless,” Baker stated. “No one believes in the sanctity of life more than the men and women of the Fort Smith Police Department.
